AGATE

BIRTHMONTH: September

Because of its different kinds and colors, agate stones have different metaphysical symbols. In ancient times, agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet, it was said to quench thirst and protect against fever. In modern times it's believed to give energy, courage, protection, healing, and calm. It also enhances creativity and strengthens the intellect. All agates have excellent protective and healing energy, and stimulate analytical capabilities and precision.

Emotionally, agate gives courage, emotional strength, self-confidence, and dispels fears. It can also lessen feelings of envy by grounding the emotions. It is particularly helpful to people who are having a hard time with forgiveness and letting go of bitterness and resentments in family or romantic relationships.

MYTHS & LEGENDS

The Sumerians used agate by wearing it with other stones around the neck and wrist to conjure the curses of Goddess Lamashtu threatening the new-born children. In ancient China, it was believed that agate came from the brain of a fossilized horse. It was also supposed to come from the recrystallisation of spilled blood during the era of the Yellow Emperor (2500-2600 BC). Agate was highly revered at least since the Han Dynasty of East China (25-220 BC) where its tints of red were extremely appreciated.

ABOUT THE STONE

These gemstones are formed when cavities in host rocks are filled with siliceous matter. The inconsistent layerings of these matters give the agate its unique appearance. It is often found as a round nodule, with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. The bands sometimes look like eyes, fanciful scallops, or even a landscape with trees.

Bead Bangle

You may be wondering why I would give away this pattern for free when I can sell it. Well,  I'm really not so good with giving (and taking) written instructions. So to be fair, I only sell patterns that I can give accurate instructions on.  I rely mostly on pictures, I find them easier to follow. So hopefully the images I included helps too if my written instructions become too confusing. I had to use a dark background so the threads would show.  1.       Start with the basic netting technique. String in 147 pieces of seed beads. Pass the thread through the 6th bead from the last. 2.      String 5 beads then pass through the sixth bead from the previous row, repeat to the end. 3.      Leave 6 beads at the tail. String 8 beads then pass thread through fourth bead from previous row. Repeat until you have a total of 9 rows. 4.      String 8 beads then pass the thread through the 6th ...

Start Off With These Chinese & Taiwanese Dramas

Even before Kdramas, I was already so into Hong Kong movies that I remember writing all the movies I’ve seen on a notebook, which I’ve since lost. Jackie Chan & Jet Li movies were faves, but Star Movies Chinese introduced me to so many others. After watching Gen-X Cops, I fell in love with the gorgeous actors and I’d see anything with Stephen Fung, Nicolas Tse, and Daniel Wu that was on, even ones without subtitles! Oh and also Takeshi Kaneshiro! But at some point, I couldn’t access Star Movies Chinese anymore. I don’t remember exactly if they became unavailable in our country or you had to pay extra for that channel. Whatever it was, it ended my love affair with Hong Kong Movies. Which is okay in a way, since I got too busy with life anyway. And then  Meteor Garden  happened. They showed it on a local channel and was Filipino dubbed. After that blew up, local channels started showing dubbed Taiwanese dramas. But it wasn’t easy to follow the series since it was on at aroun...

Getting Checked for Breast Cancer: What It Really Costs in the Philippines

Many cancer awareness campaigns focus on symptoms and early detection, but what we don’t talk about enough is how fear of the cost can stop people from even getting checked. When I first felt a small lump on my breast in early 2023, my biggest worry wasn’t what it might be, it was how much it would cost to find out. Like many Filipinos, I assumed that everything about cancer care in the Philippines was expensive, from consultations to hospital tests. That belief made me delay getting checked for months. I wish I had found something then that explained the real costs of breast cancer diagnostics, not to scare me, but to prepare me. To show that while treatment can be costly, getting checked and diagnosed doesn’t have to be out of reach. For over a year, I tried to ignore the lump, convincing myself it was probably just a cyst. I didn’t have pain or any other symptoms, so I waited, until one day, I noticed nipple bleeding. That was when I finally saw a doctor and learned that I had a rar...
