MYTHS & LEGENDS
A butterfly carved
from jade holds a special romantic significance. Ancient Chinese legend tells
of a youth who wandered into the garden of a wealthy mandarin in pursuit of a
multi-colored butterfly. Instead of being punished for trespassing, his visit
led to marriage with the mandarin's daughter. Today, a jade butterfly
symbolizes successful love.
ABOUT THE STONE
Jade is a term that is actually used for two different types of stone: Jadeite and Nephrite. The two minerals bear considerable resemblance but differ in their chemical composition and colour. Nephrite ranges mainly from mid to dark green or grey-green, but it can also be white, yellowish or reddish. Rarer, and somewhat tougher, jadeite displays hues which include green, but also white or pink, and reds, blacks, browns and violets.
